Our take on the “What For?” of ChangeMakers was hearteningly congruous:
• to help myself and others to recognise our personal social justice visions
• to get support for my voluntary efforts as a more active citizen
• to support others in their choices in working for the common good
• a place to float questions about the why, how, who, where and when regarding people’s ideas for social justice
• to deepen my skills and effectiveness in taking initiative for social justice
• recognising that the focus for the change process needs to be on the personal
• discussing and consciousness-raising around the background causes of problems with a view of finding individual solutions
• a place to learn how to work better with others
• a space to listen, think and hear what is being said between the words
• a place to respect individual ideas without aiming to push a particular barrow or try to convince

How is ChangeMakers different from other groups?
• it is mainly built on pre-existing relationships
• it is not project specific but is working on a diversity of interests
• it has a co-operative design and the curriculum is developed by the group
• it is not hierarchical
• it is capacity building on the level of the individual
• listening and learning are key features
• we have shared responsibility for processes and are constantly questioning our processes and willing to alter them
• it is open to experimentation
• has no focus on fundraising outside of the group
• it is completely voluntary
• people can use it as a report-back place, to act an a place for accountability for their own actions
• it’s like driving together on a roundabout: making eye contact, connecting what we are each doing, seeing what’s coming and what’s been, letting people in, moving out of the way, getting a feel that for the short time we are on the roundabout together we are all on a larger journey.

Planning Meeting for 2007 ChangeMakers in Taranaki
from Dave:
Hi all, I hope this doesn't come all higgly piggly in format.
Seven of us came to the planning meeting: Sue, David, vivian, Raewyn, Antona, Lynne and Dave on 12 February.
After dinner, we engaged in a process of individually writing our understanding of the “What For?” of ChangeMakers. We also considered how ChangeMakers is different from other groups we’ve belonged to. We also watched a half hour video of a speech by Paul Hawken on the emergence of global community action.
One term Hawken used, which I am going to take the liberty to use in the summary below. In lieu of “social change” I am going to use social justice — which I think better describes our intention: an aim toward justice rather than “change” which could mean anything, including endless, meaningless restructuring.
We decided to have another meeting on 5 March (7:30) at the Garage.
Again, anyone wanting to be involved in the design and direction of our groups is invited. At this meeting …
• we agreed that we would each re-read the evaluation that was sent out last year and be prepared to discuss it with an eye to making changes to the design of the 5-10-5-10 meetings
• we will design the introductory weekend
• we will set the perimeter dates for the coming season of meetings.
